While Shipyard is a fine brewery that makes quality beer, we're a little concerned with this offering. It wasn't the biggest turnoff, but the buttery aroma present in this brew is evidence of the beer not spending quite enough time in the fermenter. Because of the slightly elevated levels of diacetyl, or buttery notes, we weren't able to fully appreciate the malt and hop intricacies in the aroma. Fortunately, the flavor wasn't as buttery as the scent and had a slightly sweet maltiness with a mild hop bitterness. While still soft on the palate like all the other English pale ales we reviewed, the carbonation was a little higher and made the wheat-color brew quite appetizing. |
