A visitor to Pentlow wouldn't be blamed for believing he was lost; certainly the old barns in the distance couldn't be Nethergate Growler Brewery, the operation that is home to more than 40 top-notch microbrews? The only tip-off might be the fields of barley growing just outside. Converted in 2005, the barns of Nethergate are a testament to the fresh new attitude toward brewing that is emerging from the brewers at Pentlow. Old Growler shows this attitude with toasted malt notes in the aroma and even a hint of whiskey and vinous grapes. The weak head could be improved, but the clean chocolate malts and the mild yet consistent hop flavors are pleasant and help the beer to finish cleanly.
