When most people think of Guinnes, they envision a big, creamy head atop a smooth beer served straight from the tap. For the many years before shipping kegs across the Atlantic was possible, however, getting a Guinness mean ordering up a bottled Extra Stout. This style of Guinnes is stylistically different than its draft brother: It's quite dark, more filling, and much more robust in flavor. The aroma starts off with fruity esters and follows with the smell of smooth, dark roasted grains. While the classical toasted notes are present, they are subdued by the solid roasted flavors. Overall, this Guinness is a bit heavier than many stouts, but it's also quite refreshing.
