American Barleywine
ABV: 10.2%
IBU: 90
RATING
94
Great Divide claims that this beer has a mellow aroma in the first sniff, but we think it's still pretty strong. (The brewery is known for brewing "extreme beers," so maybe they've just gotten used to big aromas.) The hops dominate the aroma and don't let up in the flavor. The complex malf flavors are redolent of a strong port wine, but with a significant roast overtone and some breadlike notes. The body of this brew is thick and creamy and will hold up well with strong cheese as well as spicy Mexican fare. Don't miss out on the beautiful looks of this beer either. It is brilliantly clear with a solid head from all of the hops.
