Schwarzbier (Black Beer)
ABV: 4.1%
IBU: Unknown
RATING
89
Leave it to a beer named after an outlaw to push the limits of the style. Schwarzbiers are generally mellow and smooth -- not that this brew is harsh or rough, but it doesn't exactly taste like all the other black beers out there. First off, it has the strongest malt aromra of any of these brews. The roasted character is very noticeable, as is the dark opaque color of this lager. The roasted flavor runs very deep; unfortunately, it is slightly burnt and a little too hoppy. Like every other aspect of this beer, the carbonation is also slightly over the top. None of these aspects makes the beer bad; just don't expect a traditional Schwarzbier when you head into this one. If you're looking for a robust, dark lager, however, you've just found your beer.
