Schwarzbier (Black Beer)
ABV: 4.9%
IBU: Unknown
RATING
90
Perhaps the best way to describe a good German black lager is to say that it doesn't have to be hearty to be good -- some of the best Schwarzbiers are the most mild and clean. Kulmbacher makes one flavorsome example, which has a smooth roasted taste with minor sweetness and low noble hops in the aroma. The deep amber color with burgundy highlights is attractive and is topped by a rocky head. Great flavor follows the aroma with a mild toasted essence and an intangible malt presence that leave your tongue refreshed and wanting more. This brew could be a bit smoother and slightly less astringent, but on the whole, it's easy to drink and enjoy.
