In the 1940s, temperature control wasn't a luxury afforded to breweries that shipped their wares. Often, beer trucks would be forced to drive wodden barrels through cold weather and some of the water in the beer would freeze. This was an accident of course, but the ice yielded a very concentrated -- and rumored to be incredible -- beer. Thus, modern day brewers as Schneider decided to reproduce this accidental eisbock (ice block), resulting in a delicious beer with just as many wine aromas and tastes as traditional malt flavors. It is a dark, captivating brew (reminiscent of a fine sherry or cognac), yet it is surprisingly easy to drink. And while it has virtually no head, there is an intangible quality of this beer that leaves you wanting more.
