Despite the common misconception that they're grapes, black currants are small berries that grow on a four-foot-tall shrub. When used in beer, they give the brew deep purple and red hues. In this brew, they give off some fruit aroma, but not nearly enough. The hay and earthy aromas are enjoyable though, and they start the taste off well. The black currants make a noticeable introduction in the flavor, and while the final product is more sour than sweet, the fruit is very enjoyable. The mouthfeel of this beer is slightly too acidic and somewhat thin, but on the whole, it is an enjoyable lambic with a distinctive fruit taste. |
