Old Blue Hair Barleywine is made in very limited quantities, so get your hands on it any way you can. Sometimes, this strong ale is aged in whiskey berrels, which creates a powerful, wonderful oak flavor. The 2007 batch was aged in Heaven Hill barrels that previously held liquor for 23 years. Charred oak flavors are subtle in the nose, as are sweeter malts. You're likely to both smell and taste bourbon flavors of vanilla and alcohol. Malt flavors are unmistakable in the mouth and meld very nicely wtih the bourbon flavors. Hops are kept at a low level in this brew, which allows the malt and oak to shine. Let Old Blue Hair -- like most barleywines -- age for an even better experience. |
