92
Anchor Brewing has crafted this beer in San Francisco since 1896. It's particularly well known for this style, and has even trademarked the use of the word "steam" on its labels (which is why you'll often see steam beers labeled as "amber lagers"). Anchor Steam starts with a pleasant hop aroma marked by a very woody and earthy hop presence. Malt flavors lag behind a bit in the aroma but are very dominant in the flavor. Northern Brewery hops are enjoyable in the flavor, but the rich, almost chewy malt is the best aspect of this brew. The body is thicker than most steam beers, but the carbonation is perfect, the mouthfeel remains crisp and smooth throughout the swallow, and there are no off flavors to speak of.
