Based on a very old recipe, this beer gives a wonderful glimpse into Old World brewing. 1554 pours a very dark amber color with a big, frothy, tan head. The aroma shows off plenty of cereal grain character, sweet malts, and soft, earthy tones. Its flavor grips the tongue with molasses and toffee sweetness before letting go and revealing mildly musty and roasted barley tastes in the end. This is a rich, full-bodied brew with creamy carbonation and smooth alcohol. It finishes dry, and its roasted grain flavors last well into the aftertaste.
