RATING

Mad River produces four Steelhead brands: This beer is marked by the two steelheads flying out of the river on the label. No matter, though; as once you open this double IPA, it’s pretty obvious what you have. The beer is a deep gold color with a frothy, white head. The aroma is powerfully hopped, while sufficiently caramelized in its malt character, and not at all distracted by alcohol. Its flavor is bold, beginning with a significant amount of sweetness, light toasted bread notes, and a bit of caramel. The sweetness is overcome quickly, as the oily, grassy, citrusy hops provide a lot of flavor. Steelhead’s bitterness is kept in check by its sweetness, but still remains significant, all while ensuring the hops are fresh and clean, not harsh. This is a full-bodied beer, with high carbonation and soft alcohol warmth; it finishes dry with a long-lasting grapefruit and spice aftertaste.
