American Brown Ale

RATING
91
Avery Brewing has made a name for itself with its extreme beers, but Ellie’s is proof that Avery can also make a fantastic, by-the-book brew. This is a copper-color beer with a creamy, tan head that provides elegant lacing on the glass. The aroma is full of lightly toasted grains, caramelized sugars, and a faint alcohol presence. Drinking this is no chore, with a bold, upfront sweetness that’s grainy in nature, similar to whole-grain cereals. The graininess also plays out on the sides of the mouth, providing a bit of soft grain astringency that works in tandem with the subdued peppery qualities of the hops. Ellie’s finishes dry and has a lasting European malt character, similar to an Oktoberfest made with Munich malts.
