Beer Reviews » American IPA » Big Swell IPA brewed by Maui Brewing Co.
Issue: November December 2009
Pale gold and clear with a healthy tan head, Big Swell emits an aroma that seems a bit bashful, but fits right in with the style; citrus scents, a touch of caramel, and understated alcohol play gently in the nose. The first sip displays a grainy, cereal sweetness that’s short-lived; aggressive hops push their way to center stage with bitter and grassy elements and an orange-grapefruit finish. The beer presents a well-rounded body that’s neither heavy nor thin; the mouthfeel, added to a dry finish and long-lasting hop aftertaste, makes for a more refreshing example of the style than most. Alcohol is fairly tucked away; just a slight warmth appears in the throat.
