By aging this wheat beer in new American medium-toasted oak barrels, Allagash created an extremely subtle, elegant brew with flavors evocative of 18th century colonial America. Pouring dark cola with a thick, tan head, Odyssey, when allowed to warm, emits a fragrance of raw wheat, woody oak, and the slightest hints of blackberry and figs. Similar notes come forward in the flavor, with an additional deep-roasted malt presence suggestive of a porter. Wheaty tartness and woody tannins pinch the cheeks, but the brew stays cohesive as the flavors trail off into a dry, honey-sweet finish with a pleasant alcohol presence that warms the throat. |
