Anvil is impressive to look at: Its dark auburn body’s accented with rich ruby highlights, while a thick, tan head balances neatly above. Deeply inhale this brew to reveal a fruitcake aroma; prunes, raisins, and a soupçon of grassy hops blend well. On the front of the tongue, dark fruits sink in before sweet caramel and burnt sugar take control. Anvil certainly delivers on its name with heavy bitterness, but this quality’s somewhat disjointed when matched against the beer’s sweet notes. A highly drinkable brew, the components of a classic ESB are here, yet they leave the palate a bit untidy. |
