The City of Brewery Love
Published by Scott Bixby on 7.2.2008 at 10:39 a.m.Philly’s long-standing position as one of the top U.S. cities for beer is about to get another boost. DRAFT contributor Don Russell, also known as Joe Sixpack, will read from his new book, “Joe Sixpack’s Philly Beer Guide: A Reporter’s Notes on the Best Beer-Drinking City in America,” at the Philadelphia Free Library, Wednesday, July 16.
Russell, a two-time “Beer Writer of the Year,” has written a weekly beer column for the Philadelphia Daily News for over a decade, and has now parlayed that experience into a book full of insider’s tips: like where to find the best brewpubs, breweries, and beer bars, barroom secrets, walking tours, festivals, and lots of fine, cold beer!
After the reading, McGillin’s Olde Ale House will open its doors for “Joe Sixpack Night,” where Russell will discuss his book and favorite beers. McGillin’s, Philadelphia’s oldest continuously operating tavern, will serve the “Joe Sixpack of Beer,” a sampler featuring six different brews. For those who just can’t keep their enthusiasm for Philly’s beer culture to themselves, McGillin’s will also have karaoke for fans to sing their favorite sudsy song.
